Kinja'd!!!

GT40 for your time :)

The lady and I will be traveling to North and South Carolina in April and I need your best REAL bbq suggestions. By real bbq I mean: order by the pound, preferable saw dust for a floor, no frills, straight up awesome bbq. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Drop some knowledge on this city boy.

Duke’s in Orangeburg, SC. It’s a few miles off I26 headed towards Charleston. There is also Hite’s in Leesville, SC, which is good if you want to try SC style mustard BBQ, and though it’s not as popular, for the same reason I would recommend Price’s in Gilbet, which I prefer. It’s also within walking distance of my house.

Don’t go to Maurice’s, I tried them in Columbia SC and it wasn’t worth getting.

Definitely not. It’s basically a chain now. It’s soggy and overpriced.

I’d need more information about route and destinations. If I say something in Greenville SC and you’re going to Myrtle Beach that’s a 4 hour travel distance.

I moved to eastern NC 4 years ago from Pennsylvania. Eastern North Carolina bbq is a different style of bbq. Whole hog, pulled pork, with an apple cider vinegar based bbq sauce (none of that “brown stuff”). I was skeptical at first but it is insanely good when done correctly.

I highly recommend the Skylight Inn of Ayden NC. Family owned since the 40's (many of the locals still just call it “Pete Jones”). It’s shown up on a few national bbq lists, and it deserves it. They recently opened a second location up the road in Greenville NC. It’s called Sam Jones BBQ. They have a bigger menu but it’s a more upscale place.

If you’re headed to Asheville, the two you pretty much have to try are 12 Bones by the river and Buxton House on the south side of downtown.

12 Bones does things TX-style. Buxton is more NC traditional vinegar-based

There’s also a great little place at the end of Haywood Rd behind Izzy’s but I can’t come up with the name.

Don’t get BBQ in SC. They use mustard down there.

If you make it to Columbia SC, I'd highly recommend Palmetto Pig Bar-B-Q for mustard-based BBQ.

In general, pick any non-chain restaurant in Eastern NC or SC and you won't be disappointed. The smaller the place and the bigger the overcrowded parking lot, the better. And you can't go wrong with any place called "Duke's" that I've ever seen.

Bonus big-plate portions guarantee if there's a bunch of police cars or a firetruck parked outside at lunchtime.
